Google Ad Grants for UK Charities: How to Apply, Improve and Turn Clicks into Donations

If you work or volunteer in a UK charity, you’re probably wearing about six hats at once. Fundraising, comms, events, the website, maybe the kettle rota too.

So when someone says “you should be using Google Ads”, it can sound like one more thing on an already overflowing list.

But here’s the good news: Google offers eligible charities free search advertising through the Google Ad Grant, and when it’s set up well, it can put your cause in front of people who are actively searching for what you do.

In this guide, I’ll walk through how to apply for the Google Ad Grant, how to improve an account that isn’t performing, and how to use PPC to build smoother donation journeys.

What is the Google Ads Grant?

Part of Google for Nonprofits, a programme that gives charities access to a range of free tools, the Google Ad Grant gives eligible charities up to $10,000 a month (roughly £7,500) in free search advertising. This means that when people type in terms related to your work, such as “volunteer opportunities near me” or “support for carers in Leeds” your ads appear on Google Search results

This is something that can make have a great positive impact in your visibility, especially for people who are already curious about your cause.

However, before applying, it’s worth checking you meet the basics.

Is your charity eligible?

In the UK, you’ll generally need:

  • Mission-led content. Your site should focus on your cause rather than commercial activity.

  • Agreement to Google’s additional terms for the Ad Grant.

  • A good website. This is important. Google wants visitors to have a positive experience (and so do users!). UX (User Experience) plays a vital role here. Look at your website and ask there questions:

    • Is the information about the mission, programmes and events clear?

    • Is navigating the website easy?

    • Are my calls-to-action ((donate, volunteer, learn more) clear?

    • Is my SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser bar) valid?

If your website is a bit tired, don’t panic!

Many charities tidy it up before applying, and it’s time well spent, because a better site helps your ads and your supporters.

How to apply for A Google Ads Grant

If you’re eligible, you can now start the process of applying. It’s quite straightforward, but there might be some wait time - so the sooner, the better!

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Register with Google for Nonprofits. In Google for Nonprofits, click “Get started”. Choose your organisation type and country, then enter your charity’s legal name and registration number.

  2. Add your contact details and accept the Terms of Service.

  3. Get verified. Google will confirm your charity’s status. Once you’re verified, you’ll be able to access the programme.

  4. Activate the Ad Grant. Log in to your new account, find the Google Ad Grant section, and request activation. You may need to complete some eligibility forms.

  5. And wait for the review. Google usually reviews applications within around five working days. Once you’ve been approved, the real work begins.

Getting the grant is the easy bit. Keeping it, and making it work hard, is where many charities struggle. Google sets some firm rules for Ad Grant accounts, and falling short of them can lead to suspension.

So let’s make sure you’ve got the basic tools to manage your Google Ads Grant.

How to best manage a Google Ads Grant account for your UK charity

You’ve gotten your Google Ads Grant, you’ve got your account, but now you’re worried about underperforming or not knowing how to make the best of it.

Don’t worry - you’re not alone in that sentiment.

Here are the top 5 things you can do to improve your Google Ads Grant PPC charity campaigns:

  • Keep your click-through rate above 5%

  • Get your account structure right with at least at least two ad groups

  • Use ad extensions to use the full power of Google Search Ads

  • Set up conversion tracking for things that matter

  • Log in at least weekly

Of course, using PPC (pay-per-click) campaigns effectively has a lot more to it. So how can charities in the UK effectively use PPC campaigns? It all starts with setting clear goals for the campaign. From there, you’ll have to review data, research keywords, improve landing pages, review more data, and apply those insights through A/B testing, learning and iterating…

There’s a lot you can do.

So it’s important to understand that there are a few common pitfalls.

Common mistakes UK Charities make with Google Search Ads

The Google Ad Grant can be a brilliant opportunity for charities, but it’s easy to waste it without the right setup and ongoing attention. Here are a few common mistakes to look out for:

  • Setting up the grant and never looking at it again

  • Targeting broad, single-word keywords that attract the wrong audience

  • Sending all traffic to the homepage

  • Not tracking donations or sign-ups, so there’s no way to see what’s working

  • Ignoring compliance emails from Google

The good news is every one of these is fixable!
